Co-supplementation with ginger + echinacea strengthens regular Covid-19 treatment

Echinacea supplementation reduces the symptoms of a viral infection, we wrote a few years ago. Supplementing with ginger has the same effect. The virus-inhibiting effect of ginger has even been demonstrated in people with Covid. So you may wonder what happens when echinacea and ginger are combined. A trial was published in 2021 that provides an answer to that question.

Study
The trial we are talking about appeared in the Journal of Complementary & Integrative Medicine. It was carried out by researchers from Saveh University of Medical Sciences in Iran. In Iran, the influence of large pharmaceutical companies is limited, so researchers still have the opportunity to study the effects of minerals, vitamins and natural plant extracts.

In the spring of 2020, the researchers treated 100 people aged 18-65 with a relatively mild form of Covid with hydroxychloroquine for 7 days.

For half of the test subjects it remained at that [Control]. The other half also received supplements in addition to this regular treatment [Experimental]. Three times a day, the subjects took one tablet with an echinacea extract and two tablets each with 500 milligrams of ginger extract.

Results
Before the study started, the two groups had roughly the same symptoms. One difference was that the experimental group suffered significantly more from coughing.

Seven days later, the subjects in the experimental group were doing better than the subjects in the control group. They suffered less from coughing, had less muscle pain and were able to breathe better.

Fewer subjects in the control group ended up in hospital than in the experimental group, but that difference was not statistically significant.

Conclusion
"Taking into account the efficiency and trivial side-effects of Zingiber officinale and Echinacea, using them for alleviation and control of the clinical symptoms in Covid-19 outpatients is recommended", the researchers summarize.

Ginger kicks your immune system up a notch - now we know how
The amount of 6-gingerol - the main active substance in ginger - you need for this is modest. You should be able to get enough 6-gingerol through regular ginger tea to activate your immune system.

Ginger speeds up recovery from Covid-19 by thirty percent
Just in case SARS-CoV-2 makes a surprising comeback, we read a Chinese trial in which ginger supplementation accelerates recovery from Covid-19.

The antiviral effect of fresh ginger
It could just be that fresh ginger - that is, ginger roots, not the dried ginger powder - offers protection against the common but contagious cold virus.
