Apples protect against arteriosclerosis

Daily consumption of apples protects crucial arteries from calcification. This is shown by an Australian study in which more than a thousand women over the age of seventy participated.

Apples protect against arteriosclerosis
In 2016, epidemiologists at the University of Western Australia published a study involving 1052 women over the age of 70. The researchers had scans of the women, on which they could see whether and to what extent their abdominal aorta had calcified.

Calcification of the abdominal aorta can reduce the supply of blood, and therefore oxygen, to the lower body.

The study participants had answered questions about their fruit intake. The researchers then tried to find an association between the women's fruit consumption and the condition of their abdominal aorta.

Results
The researchers found no protective effect of fruit in general. Even when they looked at specific types of fruit, they also saw no protective effect from pears, bananas and oranges.

However, the researchers discovered that apple consumption reduced the risk of aortic calcification. With every 50 grams of apple that the women consumed daily, their risk of severe abdominal aortic calcification decreased by 24 percent.

Fifty grams of apple is two thirds of a small apple. Without core.

Mechanism
Apples contain pectin. Pectin lowers cholesterol levels. Quercetin and other phenols in apples have the same effect. They also inhibit the oxidation of cholesterol and relax the blood vessels.

Conclusion
"It appears as though there is some truth behind the 19th century health promotion message 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'", the researchers write.

Dietary and supplemental magnesium protects against arteriosclerosis Berries inhibit arteriosclerosis Aronia delays aging of heart and blood vessels

Dietary and supplemental magnesium protects against arteriosclerosis
If you ingest a relatively large amount of [read: sufficient] magnesium through regular foods or supplements, your chances of arteriosclerosis are smaller than if you consume less magnesium.

Berries inhibit arteriosclerosis
Arteriosclerosis is a vascular disease in which crucial blood vessels gradually become less flexible and can transport less blood and, as a result, the risk of infarcts and strokes increases.
