Adequate nutritional status protects people over 65 against Covid-19

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is currently not as feared as it was in 2020, but despite this, people are still getting Covid-19. People over 65 are especially vulnerable. A small Chinese observational study shows that well-nourished people over 65 have less to fear from the virus.

Adequate nutritional status protects people over 65 against Covid-19

Study

Researchers from Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai studied 324 people over the age of 65 who had contracted Covid-19 in the period April-June 2022. During that period, viruses of the first generation of omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 were dominant. The researchers divided their study participants into a group with mild symptoms and a group with moderate to severe Covid symptoms.

The researchers had access to the medical data of the study participants. This allowed them to look for protective factors.

Results
Good nutritional status protected study participants from serious illness. The Chinese determined nutritional status using the Mini Nutritional Assessment [MNA].

On the MNA you can score a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 11 points.

Every point that people over 65 score on this list reduced their risk of moderate-to-severe Covid by 14 percent.
