Daily dose of 1500 mg of taurine slows aging
Part of the aging process is due to free oxygen radicals that damage cells and tissues. By increasing the production of protective enzymes, a daily dose of taurine blocks this process, Brazilian scientists discovered.
Study
For 16 weeks, the women in one group [GC] took a placebo daily, while the women in the experimental group [GTAU] took 1500 milligrams daily in the morning.
The researchers used a product from Ajinomoto.
Results
Biologists can estimate the activity of free radicals on the basis of the concentration of malondialdehyde [MDA]. The more damage free radicals cause, the higher the concentration of malondialdehyde.
Taurine supplementation reduced the concentration of malondialdehyde. The effect was not overwhelming, but it was statistically significant.
Conclusion
"Further studies with doses > 1.5 g/d should be proposed to clarify the potential effects of taurine as an antioxidant agent in aging."
