Supplementation with three grams of ginseng per day increases the number of mitochondria in your cells

Supplementation with three grams of ginseng per day increases the number of mitochondria in your cells
If people use 3 grams of Korean ginseng daily, the number of mitochondria in their cells increases. This could mean that ginseng slows aging, or makes slimming attempts more successful. Or gives athletes more stamina. Or...

Study
South Korean researchers at Yonsei University College of Medicine experimented with around sixty men aged 30-70.

The men were not very healthy and were well on their way to getting type 2 diabetes. They often were overweight or obese, had high glucose levels, high blood pressure and a lot of bad cholesterol in their blood. They did not use medication yet.

The Koreans gave half of the men placebo pills every day for 4 weeks. The other half received capsules with an extract of red ginseng.

Red ginseng or Korean ginseng is different from regular or white ginseng. Red ginseng is cooked first, white ginseng is not. The researchers gave the men 3 grams of red ginseng daily. The men spread that dose over 2 moments of intake.

The researchers used a product from the Korean Ginseng Corporation. This organization sponsored the research.

The effect you see above was more convincing. Supplementation with ginseng caused a sharp increase in the number of mitochondria in the cells of the test subjects. This means that the cells can generate more energy.

This finding makes you start thinking of a range of possible health effects, such as an increase of insulin sensitivity, higher energy expenditure and therefore also a decrease in fat mass and an increase in endurance and recovery capacity.

But...
Ginseng supplementation did not lead to a decrease in glucose levels or a decrease in fat percentage. We, the stupid compilers of this free web magazine, suspect that we do not yet know everything about ginseng. Not enough, anyway.

Look, athletes and weight loss patients could only benefit from supplementation with L-carnitine when it became clear that cells need glucose and insulin to take in carnitine. Such a missing piece of knowledge is probably also needed to make people fitter, faster, stronger and healthier by administering the active substances in ginseng.
