Slower carbohydrates, fewer migraines

A low-carbohydrate diet can reduce migraines, we wrote a few weeks ago. That's great, but not everyone can maintain a low-carbohydrate diet. According to Turkish scientists, there may be an alternative. They discovered that a low-glycemic diet can also reduce migraines.

Turkish neurologists, affiliated with the Kocaeli Derince Training and Research Hospital, divided 350 migraine patients into 2 groups.

One group received regular migraine drugs such as propranolol, amitriptyline, flunarizine, and topiramate for 3 months [Medication Group].

The other group changed their diet with the help of a dietician [Diet Group]. This change meant that the subjects removed all foods containing a lot of quickly absorbing carbohydrates - in other words: foods with a high glycemic index - from their diet. Bread, biscuits, cakes, rice, pasta, potatoes, sugar, sweets, chocolate, jams, fruit juices, soft drinks and fries were banned.

After 1 month and after 3 months, the researchers looked at how the subjects were doing.

After 30 days, the subjects in the medication group were better off with regard to their migraines than the subjects in the diet group. The subjects who received medication reported fewer seizures. But after 90 days, both groups did equally well.

The researchers do not venture to speculate about the mechanism of action of a low-glycemic diet.

"The results of the study reveal that low glycemic index diet intake can be an effective and reliable method to reduce migraine attacks," the researchers write.
