Lose weight three times faster with XLS Medical
XLS Medical is a slimming supplement you can buy in almost any drugstore. According to the manufacturer InQpharm, it contains Litramine IQP G-002AS, a fibre obtained from Opuntia ficus-indica and Acacia spp.
In 2013 a study sponsored by InQpharm was published in Obesity, and this reported that subjects that consumed 500 kcal less than they burned lost weight three times as fast if they also took XLS Medical. The subjects took 1 g Litramine IQP G-002AS three times a day – at breakfast, lunch and supper – for a period of 12 weeks.
At the end of the 12 weeks the subjects that had been given the XLS Medical had lost almost 4 kg. The subjects that had been given a placebo only lost 1.4 kg.
In the XLS Medical group about half of the weight they lost consisted of fat; in the placebo group this figure was about a third. This is unusual, and difficult to explain. The more carefully you lose weight, the less lean body mass you lose. The results of this trial fly in the face of the general rule.
If you give the same people a fat blocker as well you'd expect even more drop outs. Some people develop intestinal problems when they use supplements that block fat absorption.
But none of this happened. The researchers lost almost no subjects.
InQpharm makes generous use of the results of this study in its advertising material for XLS Medical. While this is understandable, we are not convinced by the study. We have questions that remain unanswered after reading it.
Two authors of the study work for InQpharm.
