The longevity top 3: rosmarinic acid, pomegranate and curcumin

Scientists have published hundreds of studies in which they have tested almost all possible natural health-promoting and life-extending substances on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. A large number of those substances actually made the lab animal live longer. But which of all the substances tested works best?

The answer to that question can be found in the review article Jan Martel, a molecular immunologist from Chang Gung University in Taiwan, published in Microbial Cell. The phytochemicals that perform best are shown in the figure below.

Results
The most promising life extender is rosmarinic acid, a substance in mint and lemon balm, among other things, which increased the life span of the nematodes by 63 percent. Second and third come pomegranate and curcumin. These two substances extended the lifespan by 56 and 55 percent, respectively.

Two phytochemicals that you may not know yet are syringetin and laricitrin. Both are flavonoids that are biosynthesized in plants throught conversion of myricetin.
