How effective is androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione?

For a couple of years now designer supplements containing the DHEA analogue androsta-3,5-diene7,17-dione have been in circulation. According to supplements manufacturers the substance delays the conversion of testosterone into the female sex hormone estradiol. Indeed, there is evidence in the scientific literature which would seem to back up this claim – although it's pretty flimsy.

How effective is androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione?
Androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione is found in, among others, Double Dragon's SOS-500, a designer supplement that the maker claims will give users hard muscle mass. The most important active ingredient in the product is Delta-1-DHEA, an analogue of Delta-1-testosterone.

SOS-500 also contains the almost inactive 19-Nor-DHEA and androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione. An SOS-500 capsule contains 80 mg of the latter substance.

How effective is androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione?
Androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione occurs naturally in the human body. In the 1970s East German steroids chemists at the Research Center for Molecular Biology and Medicine detected androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione in human urine. [Endocrinol Exp. 1971 Dec;5(4):205-10.]

Two decades later in the early 1990s researchers at Tohoku College of Pharmacy in Japan studied the substance. [J Med Chem. 1994 Jul 8;37(14):2198-205.] The Japanese were searching for inhibitors of the enzyme aromatase, which converts testosterone and androstenedione into estradiol in the body. The Japanese focus on about twenty DHEA metabolites in their study.

Androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione [structural formula above] alias compound 24- turned out to be one of the best aromatase inhibitors.

And that's it
We've not been able to find any other studies on androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione. The evidence is rather flimsy. And because no animal studies have been done we've no idea what would be an effective dose of androsta-3,5-diene-7,17-dione.
