Honey, an effective cough remedy

It is autumn 2022 and half the world is awake at night coughing. The human study Ian Paul published two decades ago is more relevant than ever. Paul discovered that honey is a better cough medicine than pharmacological cough suppressants that you buy in the pharmacy.

Study
In 2007, researchers from Pennsylvania State University published a trial involving 105 children aged 2-18 and their parents. The children lay awake at night because they were coughing.

The researchers divided the children into 3 groups. Half an hour before going to bed they were given half to two tablespoons of nothing [No Treatment], the cough medicine dextromethorphan or honey.

Before the treatment started and on the first day after the children received their cough medicine, honey or no treatment for the first time, the parents told how their children had fared.

Results
According to the parents, the children coughed less often and less violently when they were given dextromethorphan than when the children did not take anything at all. In addition, the children slept better. However, honey again outperformed dextromethorphan on all counts.

The differences in the graphs above are statistically significant.

Conclusion
"In a comparison of honey, dextromethorphan, and no treatment, parents rated honey most favorably for symptomatic relief of their child's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to upper respiratory tract infection", summarize the researchers.

"Honey may be a preferable treatment for the cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood upper respiratory tract infection."
