Doctor Lubricant publishes study on sex supplement for women

The sex supplement Herbal vX works, claimed a study published in 2000 in Advances in Therapy. The composition of the supplement intended for women has since been changed, but that doesn't make the study any less interesting – even though we question its reliability.

One pill of Herbal vX, the supplement that Jacques Waynberg and Sarah Brewer tested, contains 175 mg of the Muira puama extract HV-430 and 16 mg of Ginkgo biloba extract. A pill weighs one gram. So it doesn't contain a huge amount of active ingredients, to put it mildly. The first researcher, Waynberg, claims to have developed the HV-430 extract himself. At the time that the article was published, Waynberg was director of his own sex clinic.

Despite the fact that the pills contained very little active ingredient, the supplement worked. Waynberg and Brewer gave two hundred women, who felt their sex drive was low, two pills a day for a month. At the start and at the end of the month the women had to complete a questionnaire, in which they scored different aspects of their sex life. The results are shown below.

As a result of taking the supplement the women fantasised more about sex and had sex more often too. The figure below shows this.

There was no placebo group.

Nevertheless, the researchers found their results convincing. "Treatment with Herbal vX produced a small but significant improvement in most individual areas examined, along with an overall improvement in nearly two thirds of the sample", they concluded. They suggested that the supplement should be studied more closely in follow-up studies, to learn more about which women react to Herbal vX and which do not.

That research never took place. What's more, the maker of Herbal vX changed its composition, despite the promising research results. Herbal vX no longer contains HV-430. Instead it contains Hv430-1, which is an extract of Lepidium meyenii or maca. The ginkgo was replaced by ginseng.

The second author of the study, Sarah Brewer, has no other scientific publications to her name, according to her website. She has published a number of popular books on health and sex however, such as Increase Your Sex Drive and The Bluffer's Guide to Sex.

The first author, Jacques Waynberg, has linked his name to a series of lubricants, including Dr. Jacques Waynberg Anal Gel ("Non-greasy and does not ") and Dr. Jacques Waynberg Lubrifist ("Especially designed for wide and painless dilations. Comes in handy hygienic pot with screw top.")

No doubt it's our problem. With our suspicious minds, we want to see fraudand deception everywhere. We can’t do anything about it. We are sceptical of this study.
