Dutch research | Hesperidin improves sports performance
Yesterday and the day before yesterday we wrote about human studies in which supplementation with the orange flavonoid hesperidin made athletes faster. In 2018, Dutch researchers published a study with similar results. At the risk that our posts about hesperidin will bore you immensely, we want to summarize its findings.
Researchers from the Team NL Innovation Center, an organization that develops new technology for Dutch top athletes, divided 39 active men aged 18-25 into 2 groups. One group took a placebo daily for 4 weeks, and the other group took 500 milligrams of Citrus sinensis extract.
This extract was 90 percent hesperidin or, more precisely, hesperetin-7-O-rutinoside 2S.
The researchers used an application from the Maastricht-based BioActor, an off-spin of the nutrition research group at Maastricht University. [bioactor.com] BioActor sponsored the study. The research leader of team of authors, plus another co-author, were affiliated with BioActor.
Before the supplementation started and after the supplementation period of 4 weeks, the subjects had to cycle on an ergometer for 10 minutes. The men had to cover the greatest possible virtual distance in those 10 minutes.
Hesperidin supplementation did not affect oxygen uptake, but it enabled subjects to develop more power during the time trial. Simply put, the men could pedal harder, and were therefore faster.
The power: oxygen uptake ratio decreased due to supplementation. Hesperidin apparently ensures that the body can develop more power with less oxygen.
