Carnitine reduces autism
Supplementation with a very reasonable dose of L-carnitine can alleviate autistic symptoms. This is apparent from an older American trial, which was published in 2011 in the Medical Science Monitor.
Study
Some of the boys received a placebo daily for 3 months, while others received a liquid carnitine supplement. The boys were given 50 milligrams of L-carnitine per day per kilogram of body weight.
Before and after the supplementation period, the researchers determined the degree of autism of the victims using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS).
The researchers suspect that autism may be related to mitochondria in brain cells that do not function optimally. They hope that supplementation with carnitine can reduce that deficiency.
Results
When the supplementation period was over, the average score was still in the mild-moderate part of the autism spectrum.
The table and the figures below have been reduced or simplified. Click on them for a larger or full version.
The greater the increase in the concentration of unbound carnitine in the boys' blood, the greater the improvement in the scores.
The researchers also determined how much force the boys could use to squeeze a dynamometer with their hands. The boys' hand grip strength increased by supplementing with carnitine.
