Blackcurrants increase fat oxidation and endurance
During moderate-intensity exercise, supplementation with a black currant extract can increase the oxidation of fat. As a result, athletes may be able to develop more speed with the same effort, sports scientists report in the European Journal of Applied Physiology.
Researchers from the University of Chichester in the UK gave 14 healthy but untrained men a placebo every day for 7 days. On another occasion, during 7 days, the same men were given a capsule containing 300 milligrams of black currant extract every day.
The subjects took their capsule with breakfast.
The British used CurraNZ, a product of the English Health Currancy. [healthcurrancy.com] Health Currancy paid for the study.
Each capsule contained 105 milligrams of anthocyanins such as delphinidin-3-rutinoside, delphinidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-rutinoside and cyanidin-3-glucoside.
On the last day of the period in which the subjects were given a placebo or an extract, the researchers got the men to cycle a distance of 16.1 kilometers at an intensity of 65 percent of their maximum oxygen uptake. If you are healthy but untrained, you can barely hold a conversation at this intensity.
Blackcurrant extract supplementation shortened the time by 2.4 percent.
Supplementation also changed the type of fuel the muscles used. After 7 days of supplementation with CurraNZ, the muscles burned 27 percent more fat than after a placebo.
"Short-term intake of NZBC extract capsules is associated with an improved 16.1 km time-trial cycling performance", the researchers conclude. "These findings may have implications for nutritional strategies used by endurance athletes to enhance performance and alter substrate utilisation."
