At this dose, Q10 supplementation increases insulin sensitivity

Supplementation with Q10 makes cells more sensitive to insulin, concludes a Chinese meta-study. At least, at a dose of 100 or 200 milligrams per day.

At this dose, Q10 supplementation increases insulin sensitivity

Study
In the scientific literature, researchers at Sun Yat-sen University traced 40 trials involving a total of 2,424 subjects. The trials looked at the effect of Q10 supplementation on glucose and insulin levels.

In 25 trials the subjects were diabetic. The daily dose ranged from 100 to 900 milligrams of Q10, and the duration of supplementation ranged from 1 to 6 months.

Results
The effect of supplementation with Q10 depended on the dose, the researchers discovered. The optimal daily dose was somewhere between 100 and 200 milligrams of Q10 per day. This intake lowered the fasting insulin level, the fasting glucose level, the HOMA-IR and the concentration of HbA1C.

The HOMA-IR is a marker for insulin resistance. The lower the HOMA-IR, the more sensitive the cells are to insulin.

HbA1C is glucose-damaged hemoglobin. The concentration of HbA1C says something about the glucose level over a longer period of time. The lower the HbA1C, the lower the glucose level has been in recent months.

Q10 supplementation was especially effective in people with diabetes.

Conclusion
"CoQ10 supplementation might have beneficial effects on glycemic control", summarize the researchers. "Taking 100-200 mg/day of CoQ10 could achieve the greatest benefit for glycemic control."

"These findings add new information about the beneficial effects of CoQ10 supplementation on glycemic control, and are conducive to setting up nutrition guidelines for recommended daily intake of CoQ10 in patients with glycemic disorders."
