Animal study: androstenedione more effective sex hormone than testosterone or DHT
The Mexicans gave their lab animals daily injections of different doses of androstenedione, testosterone and DHT for a period of three weeks. On days 7, 14 and 21 the researchers put the hamsters together with fertile females and noted how often they mounted the females, penetrated them and ejaculated. The graphs below show how frequently the treated hamsters mounted the females.

Androstenedione and testosterone had similar effects on the other behaviour variables: in each case, the restoration of behaviour required a lower dose of androstenedione than that of testosterone.
A daily dose of 50 micrograms androstenedione restores male sexual behaviour by 80 percent, the researchers calculated from the results of their tests. To achieve the same effect with testosterone you’d need a daily dose of 300 micrograms.
DHT had no effect at all on the hamsters' behaviour, the researchers noted. "DHT in daily doses of 25 to 1000 microgram failed to stimulate male sexual behavior in the castrated hamsters."
The researchers also looked at the effect of the steroids on the hamsters' sexual organs. Here it was DHT that had the most effect of all three substances. The table below shows the weight of the hamsters’ penises after three weeks of administration.
The tests confirm what steroids researchers have known since the 1970s: only androgens that convert into estradiol have a pro-sexual effect. And in vivo androstenedione converts more easily into estradiol in the body than testosterone does.
