Daily portion of oyster mushrooms lowers glucose levels and improves cholesterol
If you eat 150 grams of fresh oyster mushrooms every day, your sensitivity to insulin increases and the amount of triglycerides and 'bad cholesterol' in your blood decreases. Nutritional scientists from the Birdem hospital in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, discovered this.
Study
The researchers experimented with 30 type-2 diabetics. It is not clear whether the subjects used medication - but if they did, their medication was not very effective.
The researchers had the subjects eat three portions of 50 grams of oyster mushrooms every day for a week. Before and after that week, the researchers analyzed the blood of the test subjects.
The researchers then removed the oyster mushrooms from the diet of the test subjects for one week, and analyzed their blood again.
After that, they had their subjects eat oyster mushrooms for a week again, and after that week the researchers analyzed the blood of the test subjects for the last time.
Results
The oyster mushrooms lowered the glucose levels of the patient. At the end of the experiment, the fasting glucose level was almost pre-diabetic.
The oyster mushrooms didn't effect the concentration of the 'good cholesterol' HDL - but lowered the concentration of the 'bad' cholesterol types.
More convincing was the reduction of the triglycerides in the subjects' blood you see above. This decrease is not surprising. The liver uses carbohydrates like glucose to synthesize triglycerides. If the concentration of glucose in the blood decreases, the concentration of triglycerides decreases as well.
Side effects
The researchers also monitored the concentration of creatinine and the enzyme alanine aminotransferase. If these values increase, this may mean that the kidneys or the liver respectively doesn't function properly. But there was no question of that.
