Ashwagandha fights fatigue, not stress

If you suffer from chronic fatigue, supplementing with ashwagandha may provide relief, according to an Australian human study. However, according to the Australians, ashwagandha does not work against stress.

Stephen Smith, a researcher affiliated with the private Clinical Research Australia, published a human study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in which he gave 55 test subjects 2 capsules each day for 12 weeks, each containing 200 milligrams of ashwagandha extract. The extract Smith used was Witholytin, a product of Verdure Sciences. [] Verdure sponsored the study.

The main active substances are withanolides. Witholytin consists of 1.5 percent withanolides.

A control group received a placebo.

Supplementation with ashwagandha had no effect on feelings of stress, but it did on fatigue. The subjects who used ashwagandha reported a decrease of an average of 5 points. If the decrease had been one point greater, the fatigue scores would have returned to 'normal'.

The researchers emphasize that they have not encountered any side effects from ashwagandha. Strictly speaking, the table above gives no reason to doubt this. However, we do think the increase in malondialdehyde - by 85 percent, mind you - is quite on the high side. We don't understand exactly how this increase could not be significant.
