Weighing yourself daily prevents weight gain during holidays

Getting fat is usually not a continuous process. Studies in which researchers follow fat people show that most fat people build up overweight during vacations and holidays, and not in other periods. Nutrition scientists at the University of Georgia published an experimental study in Obesity in which test subjects could block the increase in their body weight in December by weighing themselves daily.

Study
The researchers divided 111 adults into 2 groups. One group started weighing themselves daily on a digital scale in mid-November, and continued doing so until the beginning of January [DSW]. The test subjects were shown statistics on their mobile phones every day, telling them how their body weight developed.

The test subjects used the Nokia Body Cardio WLAN scale. You see the thing above.

The other group did not weigh [Control].

Results
The subjects who became daily did not get fatter. So the test subjects in the other group did.

When the vacation was over, and the subjects in the experimental group no longer weighed themselves daily, their body weight remained stable. After the holidays, the test subjects in the control group lost part of their new kilos - but most of the weight gain was still present in April.

Conclusion
"Vacations and holidays are probably the two times of year people are most susceptible to weight gain in a very short period of time," says research director Jamie Cooper in a press release. [sciencedaily.com May 23, 2019] "The holidays can actually have a big impact on someone's long-term health."

The researchers do not know how daily weighing prevents the increase in body weight.

"Maybe they exercise a little bit more the next day (after seeing a weight increase) or they watch what they are eating more carefully," says Cooper. "The subjects self-select how they are going to modify their behavior, which can be effective because we know that interventions are not one-size-fits-all."
