This is the safest way (for your shoulder joint) to do pull ups

English sports scientists at Imperial College London have discovered that pull ups are safer for your shoulder joints if you grip the bar with hands at shoulder width, with your palms facing away from you.

According to the results of the study that the Brits published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, this way of doing pull ups [variation a in the figure below] causes less friction in the shoulder joint.

This means you are less likely to develop impingement syndrome in the long term than if you use variations b or c.
